Always happy to help a good cause

TLS Boxing CIC aims to provide boxing facilities for people of all ages. Primarily supporting young people in South London and neighbouring communities where inequalities are present, it will also extend to adults and support those with additional needs.

TLS Boxing CIC founder, Richard Vassall, recognised that young people and adults can be hindered in individual sports opposed to team sports. He designed a system to help parents and young people recognise, achieve and celebrate progress and find out how they can aid their development.

He developed a special skills criteria, only used at TLS Boxing, to assess the attainment level and competence of boxers of all levels. The system is used to gather information and provide valuable feedback and critique to the boxers.

The boxing gym isn’t intended to just have one purpose. It is also to provide a holistic space where people aim high and develop positive mindsets and habits. The space will facilitate community-based programmes for young people, and aim to improve their health and wellbeing through mentoring, counselling, workshops and holiday activities. The gym will be run by 5 boxing-trained parents, alongside an admin team who all volunteer their time. The team are all DBS checked and have the relevant training, including Safeguarding and First Aid, courtesy of England Boxing.

TLS Boxing CIC rented a derelict building in the Vauxhall area from Lambeth Council. Unfortunately, the building had been water damaged and affected by the elements and it needed a considerable amount of refurbishment to to get the boxing gym fully functional.

As well as the overall building works, there were numerous costly purchases required – and that is where Surrey Steels were able to help. Natasha at TLS approached us recently asking if we could help by donating steel beams to support their boxing bags.

Surrey Steels worked with Natasha and we drew the plans, fabricated the steel, then delivered and installed the structure.

It has given us a great sense of pride knowing we have helped in some way to to create a change in the lives of some people and given them opportunities, with the hope of changing their social or economic circumstances in a positive way. The gym will be opening soon – so watch this space for more news.

“Hi Mike, we can’t thank you and all at Surrey Steels enough. The steel beams will be an amazing addition to the gym. We are so grateful for the whole process and your support and we are looking forward to seeing you at our opening. We also have to thank Tom, the guy who put the beams up – he was so lovely, helpful and patient with us. Thank you so much again from Natasha and the rest of the TLS Boxing CIC team.”
